Australia’s best chicken starts with the best genetics. Grassland Poultry is an authorised grower of Sommerlad Heritage Chickens. This award-winning breed is the result of extensive development of heritage genetics. These birds will actively forage and are well-equipped to flourish in Australian conditions.
Grassland Poultry is ‘slow-grown’. The result is a better outcome for both our birds and our customers. Healthy, happy birds don’t need antibiotics or chemicals. Allowing these active birds to grow at a natural rate, gives them strong bones, healthy organs and ultimately, award-winning flavour.
Our farm, ‘Meramie’ is 1500 hectares, much of it is Box Gum grassy woodland, naturally ideal for poultry that like to roam, exercise and forage. Our chickens are bred, hatched, raised and processed on-farm; very rare for a pasture raised meat bird operation.

Grassland Poultry is an authorised grower of Sommerlad Poultry
Sommerlad Poultry’s award-winning chicken is unlike any other available in Australia. Extensive development of heritage genetics result in slower growing birds with active foraging ability and a far greater ability to flourish in Australian conditions.
Combined with traditional free range pasture rearing and whole grain feeding, Sommerlad chicken is highly sought-after for the outstanding texture, flavour and nutrient density that comes from a naturally slow growth rate that allows their organs, muscles and bones to grow in harmony.
Grassland Poultry is PROOF certified
Pasture Raised On Open Fields (PROOF) certifies that all animals are born and raised outdoors with continuous and unconfined access to pasture throughout their life time. They are kept at a stocking intensity that will ensure forage is always available in a sustainably managed rotational grazing system.
